Dr. Spangler grew up in this area and attended the University of Michigan for both his undergraduate work and dental school. He graduated with his DDS degree from Michigan and completed an optional year of general practice residency at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. Following the completion of his residency, he started a private practice in Bloomfield Hills and took over the practice of his family dentist in 1983. During his career, Dr. Spangler has not only been an active student, taking courses from the best dentists in the country, but active in the profession as well. He has been president of the Oakland County Dental Association and has served on committees at the state and national level. In addition, he taught in the general practice residency program during this time. He continues to enjoy treating general dental patients in his private practice, as he has for the past 38 years.
In 2009, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland approached Dr. Spangler about restarting the general dental residency program, which had closed in 1988. He became the program director and, along with Dr. Nisha Yusef, reopened the program. He is also currently chief of the Division of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is the home of the Henderson Dental Center, where general dental residents provide treatment for patients who have financial or physical barriers to obtaining dental treatment. Dr. Spangler led the organization and structure of the residency program from the inception. The Henderson Dental Center and the General Dental Residency program were awarded the Robert Sosnick award by the Jewish Fund of Metropolitan in 2019 as the outstanding non-profit organization in the Detroit area.
